Chickering is the U.S.’s oldest piano manufacturer (1823) and has pioneered some basic manufacturing innovations during that time period. Some Chickering grands can be wonderful pianos when rebuilt. As with Baldwin, due to market pressures, Chickering produced some models that were less expensively built. Also, like older Baldwin grands, a one piece front fall usually indicated a better made model as compared to a folding two piece front fall model (a front fall is the case part of the piano that can cover the keys).
